Written by a NHS patient at Northampton General Hospital

Dr Feras Mustafa is an outstanding physician and human being. He went above and beyond his duties to make sure my family member was comfortable and progressing appropriately. He not only sent his colleagues to visit the patient daily (sometimes twice daily). He closely monitored the medication he was prescribing, provided us with fact sheets and warned us of side affects to look out for. He then personally visited us whilst they were an inpatient, answered all questions my family member had and made sure that they understood all that was said. Upon discharge, we had a few issues with side affects, and followed protocol to speak to a new doctor for assistance. We weren’t able to get hold of a doctor and in my desperation, I called Dr Mustafa’s inpatient team who were more than happy to assist. Dr Mustafa contacted us immediately, walked us though what should be done, made the adjustments to the medication and notified our GP. He is truly an amazing doctor and of great value to the medical profession. My family trust him whole heartedly and cannot recommend him enough. Thank you for everything, thank you for your care, humbleness and expertise. I must also add, every member of Dr Mustafa’s team was as kind and amazing as he was, which is a testament to his leadership and teaching skills. Dr Mustafa is a physician to be emulated by other doctors and his way or practice should become the standard of care expected throughout the healthcare industry rather than the great anomaly he currently is. I reiterate, Dr Mustafa is one of a kind and I am happy to have crossed his path at such a critical time in my family members life.

I have worked with Dr Mustafa providing care and support for patients who have been admitted to NGH. Working together supports and enhances joint working relationships between NGH and NHFT to provide the best possible care for patients. Dr Mustafa is extremely knowledgeable and considers the patient in a holistic way. He considers the potential for diagnostic overshadowing. He communicates with respect and shares his knowledge to support both patients and staff at NGH. I feel confident that if Dr Mustafa has assessed or reviewed a patient then he has considered all the patients needs - biological, psychological and social - his approach is considered and thorough and he will ensure effective feedback and record keeping to ensure the assessment is communicated to NGH staff delivering ward based care. He ensures that any safeguarding concerns are raised and followed up appropriately. He is readily available and approachable and considers other professionals views. He is clearly passionate about quality patient care.

Dr Mustafa is an exceptional doctor who I have the privilege to work with. When I first began working at ALMHS, it was my first job working in acute frontline crisis and I felt so out of my depth however Dr Mustafa was so supportive, he had an open door policy (via telephone) where you felt that you could always rely on him, no questions was too small or big and he never ever made you feel stupid to ask any question. Dr Mustafa was so welcoming amongst my ALMHS colleague that I felt part of the team nearly straight away and now I also ensure that I have such work ethic and approach to others that join the team as I understand the impact it had on me. I feel like I have learned so much from Dr Mustafa and I wonder if there is anything that he doesn't know as he always has the answer for everything! I feel so grateful to work with such an amazing team and I couldn't imagine this team without Dr Mustafa.

He explained very clearly what is wrong with my daughter, the reason for his diagnosis, the treatment he is recommending and the outcomes he hopes to achieve. He did this in a calm and reassuring way which I and my daughter found very reassuring. He was very positive throughout but was also quite clear about what the future holds and the need for her to change her lifestyle. Brilliant. He talked to both of us and I am doing this questionnaire with my daughter who is participating fully in the answers.

This feedback is provided on behalf of colleagues working in the Acute Liaison Mental Health Service at KGH, particularly Haley, Gary, Kishore, and Mark: Dr Mustafa, prior to and, during the pandemic has always made himself available to the team and during times when he has not been on duty. This was particularly so during the early stages of the pandemic where he would keep his phone on until the early hours and was available for consultation when the team were presented with multiple clinical dilemmas. He also has extensive knowledge within the field of psychiatry and general medicine and has always taken the time to share his knowledge in an accessible way with colleagues to help them understand complex issues and increase their own knowledge. The team is fortunate to have Dr Mustafa as their Consultant Psychiatrist.
